Jem asked me to choose a record from his vinyl collection. I chose "Bird Sound in Close-up and he played it at 3 rpm. . I am a big fan of field recordings on vinyl. The fact that the needle movement adds its own sound to silence. I once played a 7" of birdsong at a gig. It didn't move the crowd but slowed to this speed, and with sub woofers, I know they would have felt something and probably requested a rewind.
The Slowplayer exhibition features a different record played each day of the Festival, from Ravel to The Sex Pistols to Ornette Coleman, slowed down to the length of the gallery opening hours. With this work Finer continues his interest in long-durational processes and extremes of scale. Jem Finer is a founder member of The Pogues and has worked in a variety of fields, including photography, film, experimental and popular music and installation.
